Tradition & Trends - 2013

State Level Work Shop on `Tradition and Trends' held on 17th to 19th January 2013

The workshop on `Tradition & Trends' conducted by the AJK College of Arts and Science shed lights on traditional knowledge in the field of garment designing , which today's youth is least aware of. The three day workshop gave the students an insight into traditional textile works like Tie and Dye, Itak, Bandhini, Embroidery, Khadi, Ajrakh, Jamandhi, Maheshwari and Chanderi, in which our culture has a rich knowledge base. Drawing inspiration, the students developed various garments at the workshop designed in Indian and Indo-Western fashion.

The students created a traditional door to emphasis the `tradition' aspect of the workshop. Various illustrations and sketches such as coloured pencil art, thread art, and painting were made as a part of workshop. The sarees which are available commonly in the market were draped in different styles to enhance the workshop. Another attraction was the display of trendy garments, made of newspapers.

The workshop took the students deeper into the garment culture prevailing in states like Kerala, Kashmir, West Bengal, Tamilnadu, Assam etc, who later tried their hand in making costumes belonging to these cultures. The materials for the design works such as cotton, jute, silk, wood and their mixture were sourced within a half a day from Palakakd and Coimbatore. More than 75 students from other colleges along with the students of AJK participated in the workshop.

The workshop Resource Person Dr.Bessie Cecil (Researcher) Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery, Mysore and Mr.Praveen Nair,Fashion Designer, Hastkala, Chennai gave a beautiful description and helped the students in constructing and designing garments in the workshop.
