About the Department

The department imparts knowledge on the latest trends in the field of health and medicine that enables the students to excel themselves in the field of research with analytical, creative, problem solving skills and to meet the current needs of the industry.

About the Programme

Biotechnology is a broad subject that involves the use of living organisms and biological systems to develop various products. The more prominent area is production of drugs. It eventually proved to be helpful in industrial refineries, environmental remediation and also to improve agricultural yield. As today biotechnology industry continues to be a key engine of global economic growth, plenty of employment opportunities are available for these graduates.

MISSION

To maintain high standards of teaching by innovating pedagogy, instilling in students the ability to be lifelong learners, and continually upgrading the program curriculum of both first degree and higher degree courses in line with international standards of biology education and to meet the requirement of industry and research community.
To provide a flexible, accommodative and conducive environment for faculty members to flourish in teaching and research.
To create opportunities and a supporting infrastructure for students – through laboratory courses, projects, dissertations, and possible entrepreneurial ventures in biotechnology to achieve their aspirations.
To contribute societal outreach by inviting students from other institutions to work in the Department and internship programmes and organize workshops/short-term courses relevant to contemporary expectations in the biotechnology industry and R&D facilities

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary branch of science that is rapidly gaining significance in India and Worldwide. It is a diverse field, which ensures that there are many specializations that we can invest in. A Biotechnologist can get into Institutes & organizations such as, The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Dairy industries, Horticulture, Food processing, Pharmaceuticals, Chemical and Textile industries. Following are some of the prominent Biotech companies - Biocon, Dabur, Ranbaxy, Hindustan Lever Limited, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratory, BioNTech SE (BNTX), Vir Biotechnology, Inc.
