AJK College of Arts and Science Organizes Crochet Knitting Workshop for Skill Development and Creative Growth
AJK College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore (Autonomous), an A+ accredited institution by NAAC,, recently organized a transformative 2-day knitwear workshop through its Department of Costume Design and Fashion. The event, led by Mrs. R. Jasmine Sabeena, Proprietor of Spin & Stitch Woollen Crochet Wear, Ooty, focused on creating Hand Crochet Woollen Hand Warmers. The primary goal was to inspire students by enhancing their crochet skills, fostering creativity, and promoting personal growth through knitting.
The hands-on workshop emphasized multiple educational and developmental goals, including skill development, mindfulness, and creative expression. Students were introduced to the fundamentals of crochet and knitting, learning techniques such as casting on, pattern reading, and crafting their own projects like scarves or hats. These activities not only improved their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination but also encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving as they navigated through intricate patterns.
Beyond technical skills, the workshop highlighted the meditative nature of crochet and knitting, which can serve as powerful tools for stress relief. The repetitive motions helped students focus, relax, and develop patience, offering a therapeutic break from academic pressures. The cultural significance of these crafts was also explored, giving students a deeper appreciation for their history across different societies.
The workshop also fostered teamwork and collaboration. Students worked together, shared ideas, and helped each other overcome challenges, building both communication and social skills. The workshop's impact extended beyond just learning how to knit—it nurtured creativity, innovation, and emotional well-being.
The outcomes were tangible and intangible: students mastered essential knitting techniques, completed personal projects, and experienced a sense of accomplishment. They also expressed pride in their creations and found joy in the calming, mindful activity of knitting. Many students left the workshop with new hobbies and, for some, even entrepreneurial aspirations to create and sell their own knitwear products.
Ultimately, the crochet knitting workshop blended creativity, skill development, and emotional growth, offering students at AJK College a fulfilling educational experience.
