Empowering Future Fashion Designers: Insights from AJK College's Modeling Workshop
AJK College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore (Autonomous), an A+ NAAC-accredited institution, hosted a workshop on modeling portfolios for its Department of Costume Design and Fashion students on October 16, 2024. Led by Ms. Shilpa Seetharaman Nair, CEO of E2E Modeling Agency, the workshop focused on equipping students with essential skills in communication, styling, and managing fashion presentations, essential for success in the fashion industry.
The purpose of this modeling workshop was to bridge the gap between fashion design and effective presentation. Students learned how to communicate with models, gaining skills to direct poses and movements that highlight design features. Such communication is crucial in settings like fashion shows and photo shoots, where designers need to bring their creative vision to life through models.
Beyond communication, students honed their styling and presentation skills. They learned to effectively accessorize their creations and utilize lighting, staging, and body language to enhance the visual impact of their designs. These techniques are essential, as fashion transcends mere design; it is about conveying a compelling narrative through both the models and the presentation elements
The modeling workshop also offered insights into the backstage dynamics of a fashion show. Students experienced first-hand the flow and organization of these events, from managing model choreography to timing presentations to create a seamless runway narrative. This practical exposure was invaluable, preparing students for professional events like fashion weeks and brand showcases.
The outcomes of the workshop were clear: students walked away with improved skills in design presentation, collaboration with models, and the ability to produce high-quality portfolio materials. Observing their designs in motion, they gained confidence and an understanding of teamwork’s importance in the fashion industry. The workshop left students not only prepared but inspired, ready to face the demands of the industry and showcase their work confidently.
In student feedback, participants described the experience as eye-opening and enriching, emphasizing how working with real models helped them appreciate the intricacies of styling and directing. This hands-on approach boosted their readiness for future industry events and further solidified their passion for fashion design.
